Family Services of Greater Houston at their annual "Celebration of Families" luncheon. Cathy and Joe were the 2009 recipients of The Standard of Christ Award presented by the Jesuit Volunteer Corps South at their annual dinner.
Joe is a Professor and practicing neonatologist at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston and holds joint appointments in the Department of Pediatrics and Center for Ethics, Medicine and Public Issues. He is originally from El Paso, Texas where he went to Jesuit High School after which he obtained his undergraduate degree at Loyola University New Orleans. He received his medical degree at Tulane Medical School and did his pediatric training and fellowship in neonatology at Baylor College of Medicine. Joe is the 2007 recipient of the Arnold J. Rudolph Lifetime Teaching Award at Baylor College of Medicine.
Cathy is a former first grade teacher and received her Bachelor of Science degree from Loyola University New Orleans. She has served on the Board of Directors of Family Services of Greater Houston, The Woman's Hospital of Texas, the St. Francis de Sales School Board, the Galveston-Houston Archdiocesan Board of Education, The Cenacle Retreat House, the Founding Board of Cristo Rey Jesuit College Preparatory School of Houston, a high school serving the economically disadvantaged youth of the Houston community, and served as President of the Mothers’ Club at Strake Jesuit College Preparatory for the 2011-12 school year. She presently serves on the board of Family Resources, Inc.
Joe and Cathy were a sponsor couple for their parish marriage preparation program for over 28 years. They volunteer with their church, the boys' activities, as well as the community.
Cathy’s latest book, Good Sons Don’t Just Happen: Insights on Raising Boys from the Mother of 10 Sons, was released August 2009 and is a recipient of The Mom’s Choice Award.
